The New Bedford Whalers also recently received new helmets for the 2011 season, a donation from GEICO and local non-profit organization Good Sports.

“The new helmets will not only keep players safe, but also reduce the financial burden on parents. We hope this gives more kids in Greater New Bedford a chance to participate,” said Good Sports CEO Christy Keswick.

The New Bedford Whalers Youth Football program serves inner city kids ranging from five to 15 years old. The organization was established to promote the wholesome development of youth through their association with positive role models advocating safety, citizenship and sportsmanship both on and off the football field.

“Thanks to the generous donations over the last year, Good Sports has made a significant impact on our youth football program,” said John Gonsalves, Jr., vice president of the Whalers. “This donation will allow us to replace some of our dated inventory. We will be able to sign up more participants on each team and provide safe equipment.”
